Costa tweets again—four years on
11 June, 2012
Costa Coffee has kickstarted its Twitter feed, nearly four years after it first signed up to the service that has become a marketing phenomenon.
Costa first tweeted soon after setting up its CostaCoffee account in October 2008, with the words “We’ve finally arrived on Twitter!” Last Thursday it returned, stating: “It’s been a long time between tweets… but we’re back!” Later it added: “We’re definitely here to stay.” It has also signed up to Tumblr.
In a blog post explaining its return to Twitter, it said: “We’ve worked hard to make our stores a great place to visit, making them a haven for coffee lovers. In recent months we’ve extended this commitment to Facebook, making it THE place for fun coffee-related content and conversations. Today we’re proud to officially take our passion for coffee to two new places: Twitter and tumblr.” It has asked customers to tell it what it wants from its Twitter feed.
To mark its return, Costa has created a Twitter-style bird topping for its coffee (pictured). News of its return to Twitter has clearly spread first, as its followers have soared to nearly 9,000 by Monday (11 June) afternoon and it is receiving plenty of messages—as usual with most brands, some complimentary and some negative.
Costa has plenty of work to do to catch up with its great rival Starbucks in Twitter terms. Starbucks now has more than 100,000 followers in the UK and has successfully used the medium to spread offers around its customers. Costa has more than half a million fans on Facebook, and must now hope to transfer many of these over to Twitter.
