Openings: FlatIron, Hummingbird, YO!, Ed's Easy and Wetherspoons
11 July, 2012
J D Wetherspoon has reopened the pub in Woolwich destroyed by fire during last summer’s riots. Meanwhile, Ed's Easy Diner is going international, Hummingbird is taking to the streets and FlatIron becomes the latest steak and cocktails concept.
Wetherspoon has spent £1.3m on a redevelopment of The Great Harry. The pub, pictured, reopened on Tuesday (10 July), just under a year after it was destroyed by fire last August. Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson said: “We are delighted to be reopening The Great Harry. The pub plays an important role in the Woolwich community. In the days following the disturbances, the hoardings around the burnt-out pub became a tribute wall for people to leave messages and comments of support, which showed the importance of the pub to them and the local community.”
Ed’s Easy Diner is to open its first restaurant outside the UK in Cape Town in September. It will be situated in the Blue Route Mall in the Tokai suburb. More international openings are planned for the brand.
The Hummingbird Bakery has become the latest brand to take to the road with a mobile operation. It claims it has one of the world’s first fully equipped and functioning mobile cake bakeries, which has already visited the Lovebox, Isle of Wight and Cornbury music festivals. Its itinerary over the summer includes the Latitude, Camp Bestival, V and Brisfest events among others, plus equestrian and motorsport events. The mobile is also available for private hire.
YO! Sushi has re-opened its Heathrow Terminal 3 airside restaurant after a refurbishment. The new-look site now features 980 square feet of space and 48 covers, and is open from 6am to 10pm or the last flight.
A new pop-up steak and cocktail concept, FlatIron, will open above the Owl and Pussycat pub in Shoreditch on 18 July. It will initially take up a six-week residency there, before considering a permanent location.
