M&B cheered by strong Christmas business

Mitchells & Butlers, Britain's biggest restaurant and pub group, has reported a strong festive period trading, with like-for-like sales growth of 4.8% in the two weeks of Christmas and New Year. On Christmas Day, itself, saw like-for-like sales up 7.1% and more than 200,000 meals sold.

Five Guys will hit the landmark of 20 sites in the UK with an opening at Fort Kinnaird in Edinburgh in the next few weeks. In another bumper week of new openings news, there are plans from Hawksmoor, Busaba Eathai, Loungers, Wagamama, CAU, Draft House, Soho Coffee Co and more.

Marketing directors from two of the country’s biggest operators, Catriona Kempston of Mitchells & Butlers and Mark Palmer of Pret a Manger, will be joining the speakers panel at this year’s CGA Peach Consumer Insight & Marketing Conference at the Tate Modern in London on 18 March.

Danish-owned Japanese concept Sticks n Sushi is to open a third London restaurant in Greenwich—and has announced a fourth for the Crossrail development at Canary Wharf. Other brands with opening news this week include Drake & Morgan, Jamie’s Italian, Turtle Bay, Solita, ETM, SSP and Wildwood.

CGA Peach's 2015 events programme confirmed

CGA Peach has announced the initial dates for its 2015 programme of market-leading network events - including the return of US guru Jim Sullivan to London in May and confirmation of its flagship CGA Peach 2020 conference and awards dinner in November.

Christmas and New Year trading up 2.8% on 2013

Pub and restaurant groups had a Christmas season to celebrate with collective like-for-like sales up 2.8% on last year. Figures from Coffer Peach Business Tracker also show that London had more to cheer than the rest of the nation with like-for-likes up 4.4%%, compared to 2.3% for outside the M25, over the six weeks, including New Year, to January 3.

Premier Inn and Costa drive Whitbread growth
11 December, 2015

Whitbread reported like-for-like sales grew 6.0% in the 13 weeks to 27 November, driven mainly by Premier Inn with a 8.5% LFL uplift. Costa was up 5.2% and Restaurants ahead 1.6%. The group also announced that Patrick Dempsey, md of Whitbread Hotels & Restaurants, will step down in February to be succeeded by Paul Flaum, currently head of Whitbread Restaurants.
